State Survey Pawtucket's Church Hill Grammar School (1889-90) was documented for the State Survey. The State Survey locates, records, and evaluates Rhode Island's historic places. Field surveyors photograph properties and described their physical characteristics on data sheets. They also add notes on history, use, and general condition. Researchers study primary and secondary sources to prepare a short history of the physical development of each community, so that individual properties can be evaluated within the context of the community's growth. RI Historical Preservation & Heritage Commission has produced 58 Survey Publications to share information about each of the state's 39 towns, several historic neighborhoods, and specific thematic studies.
