Financial Assistance

The Rhode Island Historical Preservation & Heritage Commission (RIHPHC) administers several programs that provide financial support to historic preservation projects, from planning studies and National Register nominations to mill rehabs and restoration of historic museum buildings.

Non-profit organizations, cities and towns, and Federally-recognized tribes may be eligible for our grant programs. More details are available about Certified Local Government grants for preservation planning (applications available as of 1/12/24 and due by 3/15/24)  and State Preservation Grants for capital preservation work at museums, cultural art centers, and public historic sites (no new grant rounds planned). Most of the grant opportunities and resources for grant-seekers we have compiled are targeted for non-profits but well worth a look for anyone starting a historic preservation project. 

Owners and stewards of historic properties may apply for loans. 

Owners and developers of historic properties may apply for preservation tax credits for the rehabilitation of income-producing properties.
